The short answer

An engagement invitation message names the couple and the ceremony (roka, sagai, ring ceremony or engagement), gives the date, time and venue, says who is inviting, and asks for a reply by a date. On WhatsApp, keep it to five or six lines and put the full details, the map and the RSVP behind one link.

What an engagement invitation should say

An engagement is the time between the promise to marry and the wedding itself, and many families mark its start with a ceremony.[1] The invitation for it is usually shorter and more personal than a wedding card, but guests still need the same basics:

  • Who is getting engaged: both first names, and the parents’ names on a formal invitation.
  • Which ceremony: roka, sagai, mangni, ring ceremony or engagement party. Use the word your family uses.
  • When and where: day, date, time and the venue, with a map link.
  • Who is inviting: the families, or the couple themselves.
  • How to reply: a date to RSVP by, especially when it is a smaller gathering.
  • Dress code or a note, only if there is one.

When the engagement and the wedding share one invite

When the ring ceremony or roka is held a day or two before the wedding, it can simply be one of the functions in the wedding invitation, with its own time, venue and RSVP. Guests then get one link for everything. See how that works for digital wedding invitations.

Frequently asked questions

The couple’s names, the name of the ceremony (roka, sagai or ring ceremony), the date, time and venue, who is inviting, and a date to reply by. Add one personal line for close family and friends.

Yes, for most guests. Call grandparents and senior relatives first if that is your family’s custom, then send the message so the date and venue are written down.

Two to four weeks before is common, earlier if guests must travel. Send a short reminder with the map a day before.

If it is held months before the wedding, give it its own invite. If it is a day or two before, list it as one of the wedding functions so guests get one link for everything.
