The short answer

A good love letter is specific. Start with their name, bring back one moment only the two of you share, say what you love about them now, and end with a promise or a plan. Five honest lines beat a page of quotes. Below are short and long love letters for a girlfriend or boyfriend, in English, Hinglish and Hindi, to copy and make your own.

How to write a love letter in five lines

  1. Their name, or the pet name you really use. “Dear Riya” is fine; “Hey you” is too.
  2. One memory, with a detail: the place, the song that was playing, what they ordered.
  3. What you love about them now, not only how they look: the way they laugh at their own jokes, how they look after their mother.
  4. What changed in you because of them.
  5. A promise or a plan: “Sunday, the chai place near your office, my treat.”
The five lines, put together
Dear Riya, I still think about the evening the rain caught us outside the bookshop and you refused to run. I love that you never hurry the good parts. Since you, I hurry less too. Sunday, the chai place near your office, my treat. ❤️

Short love letters for your girlfriend

For a good morning
Good morning, sunshine. I woke up thinking about your laugh from last night and I have been smiling at my ceiling like an idiot. Go and have the best day. I’m proud of you, always.
Just because
No reason, no occasion. I just wanted you to know that you are the best part of my ordinary days. Thank you for choosing me, again and again.
After a fight
I was wrong, and I’m sorry. I care more about us than about winning. Can I make it up to you with your favourite momos and a long walk? I’ll listen this time, properly.
Long distance
Two cities, one moon. I miss the small things most: you stealing my fries, your voice when you’re sleepy. Every day apart is one day closer to the next time I see you.

Short love letters for your boyfriend

To say thank you
Thank you for driving me home every time, for remembering how I take my chai, and for never making me feel like too much. You make loving you easy.
When he’s stressed
I know this week is heavy. You don’t have to carry it alone. Whatever happens with work, you are still my favourite person, and I am right here.
Just because
You know that feeling when your favourite song comes on unexpectedly? That’s what seeing your name on my phone still feels like.
Long distance
I counted. Twenty-three days till I see you. I’ve already planned the first thing I’ll do: hug you for an embarrassingly long time at the airport.

Long, heart-touching love letters

A long letter has room for the story: how it started, what you have been through together, and what you hope for. Read it aloud once before you send it; anything that sounds like a greeting card, cut.

For your girlfriend
My dearest Ananya, I have tried to write this a few times, and every version sounded smaller than what I feel, so here is the plain one. The first time we spoke, at Rohan’s birthday, you argued with me for twenty minutes about the best biryani in the city. You were wrong, and I went home thinking about you anyway. Since then you have seen me at my most annoying and my most worried, and you stayed. You made my family laugh, you made my flat feel like a home, and you made me braver about the things I want. I don’t know everything that is coming. I know I want to face it with you. Thank you for being my person. Always yours, Kabir
For your boyfriend (deep and emotional)
Dear Arjun, There is a version of me from before you, and I am kinder to her now because of you. You noticed when I went quiet. You learned how I like to be comforted, which is mostly snacks and no advice. You held my hand at the hospital when Papa was unwell, and you never once made it about you. I love the way you get excited about small things: a good cup of coffee, a cricket score, a dog on the street. I love that you still open the car door for me and pretend it’s nothing. Wherever we go from here, I want you to know this: you are loved, completely, by me. Yours, today and every day, Meera

Love letters in Hinglish (Hindi in English letters)

Many couples text each other in Hinglish, Hindi typed in Roman letters. A letter in the same words sounds like you. These read the way you would say them:

For your girlfriendHindi in Roman letters
Meri jaan, Tumse milne se pehle life theek thi. Tumhare baad, sab kuch thoda aur khoobsurat lagta hai. Tumhari hansi meri sabse pasandeeda awaaz hai. Hamesha tumhara, Kabir
For your boyfriendHindi in Roman letters
Suno, Tum pareshaan hote ho toh mujhe bhi chain nahi aata. Bas itna yaad rakhna: main hamesha tumhare saath hoon, har din, har haal mein. Tumhari, Meera
Short, for WhatsAppHindi in Roman letters
Aaj phir tumhari yaad aayi, aur phir se muskura di. Jaldi milo na. ❤️

Heart-touching love letters in Hindi

For a birthday, an anniversary or a proposal

Birthday, sent at midnight
Happy birthday, my love. It’s 12:00 and I wanted to be the first. Another year of your terrible puns, your perfect hugs and you. I’m so lucky it’s me who gets to celebrate you.
Anniversary
One year ago today you said yes to a second date. Three hundred and sixty-five days later, I would still choose that same table, that same nervous conversation and you.
A proposal
I have rehearsed this so many times. You are my favourite person to do nothing with, and I want to do nothing with you for the rest of our lives. Will you marry me?

How to make a sample yours

  • Change one line into a memory only the two of you have. That one line is what they will remember.
  • Use the names you call each other, not the ones on your ID cards.
  • Write in the language you speak together: English, Hindi or Hinglish. Mixing them is fine if that is how you talk.
  • Keep it about them. Leave out comparisons with exes and anything you would not want forwarded.
  • Read it aloud before you send it. If a line sounds like a quote, replace it with something you would say.

Send it as a page they can keep

A letter in a chat scrolls away under memes and grocery lists. A digital love letter opens from one WhatsApp link instead: a gift box opens, your letter rises out of an envelope in your words, and your photos and moments follow. You can build and preview it free.

Frequently asked questions

Start with their name or the pet name you use, then go straight to a memory: “I still think about the evening…”. Skip long introductions; the first line should already sound like you.

As long as you have real things to say. Five specific lines are better than a page of general ones. For WhatsApp, keep it to what fits on one screen; save the long letter for a page or paper.

Yes. If you text each other in Hinglish, a letter in Hinglish will sound more like you than formal Hindi or English. Write it the way you would say it.

Copied quotes you would never say, comparisons with exes, and anything you would not want them to forward. Keep it honest and about the two of you.
