The short answer

A good WhatsApp wedding invitation names the couple, the date and city, the functions this guest is invited to, and links to the full invite with venue maps. Keep the message itself to five to eight lines, add one personal sentence, and send it to each person individually rather than as a forward.

What every WhatsApp invitation message should include

WhatsApp is where many Indian families now share the date first, so the message has to work on a small screen and for someone who reads it in a hurry. Put the essentials in the first three lines; WhatsApp shows only the start of a long message in the chat list.

  • Who is getting married: first names in the first line, full names on the invite itself.
  • When and where: date, day and city. Leave the full venue address to the invite link or a map link.
  • Which functions: list only the events this guest is invited to, such as haldi, mehndi, sangeet, wedding or reception.
  • How to reply: a clear RSVP request with a date, so you can give the caterer a headcount.
  • A personal line: one sentence that only this person could receive (“Nani, the mehndi won’t start until you are there”).

Messages for family and elders

Elders expect respect and warmth more than brevity. Many families still call grandparents and senior relatives first and send the WhatsApp message afterwards as a written record of the dates.

Wedding invitation messages in Hindi

For many families a Hindi message feels more personal, especially for elders. You can send both: Hindi first, English below. For complete card wording, see our guide to wedding card matter in Hindi.

One message for a multi-function wedding

When different guests are invited to different functions, avoid sending everyone the full schedule. Either write a separate list per group, or use personal links that show each family only their own events.

With the schedule
You are invited! 🌼 Ananya & Kabir • Haldi: Thu 10 Dec, 10 am • Mehndi: Thu 10 Dec, 4 pm • Sangeet: Fri 11 Dec, 7 pm • Wedding: Sat 12 Dec, 7 pm (pheras at 11:30 pm) Venues, dress codes and RSVP for each event: [invite link]

Tips for sending invitations on WhatsApp

  • Send one by one, not into a big group. A group puts every guest’s phone number in front of everyone else. WhatsApp broadcast lists send the same message to several contacts while each person receives it as a private chat; check WhatsApp’s help page for current limits, which can differ by country.[1]
  • Personalise the first line. Even with a template, change the greeting and add one line for the person you are writing to.
  • Don’t rely on an image alone. A card image without text cannot be searched later and is hard to read on small phones. Add the date and link as text.
  • Ask for RSVP with a date. “Please reply by 20 November” works better than “do let us know”.
  • Share the location separately on the day. A map link the evening before saves dozens of “where is the venue?” calls.[2]

Frequently asked questions

Yes. For most guests a WhatsApp invitation is now normal, as long as it is personal and not a forwarded card. For grandparents and senior relatives, many families call or visit first and then send the WhatsApp message so the dates are written down.

A common pattern is a save-the-date as soon as the dates are fixed (earlier if guests must travel), the full invitation four to six weeks before the wedding, and a short reminder with the venue map a day or two before each function.

Give a reason and a date: “We are confirming numbers with the caterer, so please let us know by 20 November.” An invite with an RSVP button per event makes it easy for guests to answer in one tap.

Keep the city in the message and put the full address and a map link in the invite. Long addresses make the message hard to read, and a link can be corrected later if anything changes.
